Training explores balance, hearing, & motor development in the context of pediatric vestibular and balance disorders. Training provides information for providers and families to support screenings, treatments, and cost coverage.



Course Overview


More than 1 in 20 children in the nation experience some form of vestibular or balance disorder. The chances of a child developing such a disorder also increase if they have hearing loss. This condition is marked by the symptoms of feeling unsteady or dizzy even when lying or sitting still. A child with a vestibular disorder may not reach appropriate developmental milestones such as crawling or walking due to a vestibular disorder. Therefore, parents, educators, and healthcare professionals should be aware of the signs and symptoms of vestibular impairments and make appropriate referrals for evaluation and treatment. 

 

Learning Objectives: 

1. Identify signs and symptoms of vestibular disorders in infants and children.  

2. Understand the motor and developmental milestones in infant and young children.  

3. Recognize the physical and educational impact of vestibular disorders in children.  

4. Identify children who need to be screened for vestibular disorders and know when and how to refer children for vestibular screening.  

5. Understand treatment and intervention that is provided for children with vestibular disorders.
